A calendar, for example, is scattered through the gallery, but it lacks those six months that didn't make the cut. Constraint here becomes a crucible, a laboratory for replacing what’s missing. The artworks in Absent Word Double are a series of gestures and mechanisms that try to fill the resultant holes left by Greg Smith’s BIP39 language-cull. The gears spin furiously and promise so much this project is both about how it breaks down, and how it can be used differently. There's potential, but I'm also deeply skeptical of the possibility of making a clean break. Under the mountains of hype, people are serious about trying to do governance, social groups, and cities in a new way. I respect the urge in the crypto folks who, fed up with the garbage, attempt to start anew. Sometimes constraint is exactly what is required to slip the bonds. As such, Absent Word Double is inspired by and implicated in the crypto-utopian project, embodying its optimism, its delusionality, and its commitment to D.I.Y. The text gropes, but also concretizes: it contains coded messages that enable observant (or lucky) viewers access to digital wallets containing governance tokens to a range of DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations). Advanced real time processing techniques yield realistic legato/portamento, vibrato, ornamentations & trills with phase continuity, constant-formant pitchbends, subharmonics, growl and flutter tongue to be performed in real time.As a result, textual musings in the objects and installations are necessarily ham-fisted as they consider human foibles and hopes amidst technological promise. The underlying, proprietary technology allows continuous interpolation among different vectors like time, dynamics, pitch and formants. But the analogy with a sample based library ends here. The resulting timbre is therefore that of the real instrument. It uses samples as a base material, chromatically performed by a professional sax players over a very wide dynamic range, and recorded with state-of-the-art technology. The technical name is Synchronous Wave Triggering. The Sax Brothers employ an entirely new technology, conceived by Stefano Lucato when it became clear that all the previously applied approaches simply could not do.
This is particularly true if real time playing is concerned. Despite several attempts using different technologies, ranging from traditional sampling to sophisticated physical modeling, the results obtained so far fell short of the expectations. The saxophone is probably the most difficult instrument to emulate.
